How to Get Ahead of Your Migraine and Stop It Before It Starts
One of the more common problems a lot of people face is migraine. Some experience it more frequently than others. There are migraine triggers which work differently for different people. It’s chronic for some and irregular for others. No one wants migraine as it brings constant pain in the head, affects vision and causes discrepancy in our regular activities. However, there are ways to prepare for migraine before it happens and there are ways the probability of it happening can be reduced. Here are some of these ways –
Get enough good sleep
Insufficient sleep is one of the, if not the major cause of migraine. Irregular sleeping patterns, less hours of sleep add to the possibility of catching migraine. One of the ways to tackle this is to make a routine for sleeping, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Make the bedroom comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep, proper darkness and temperature. Avoid staring at a screen one hour before going to bed.
Move your body
Exercise has many benefits and fortunately, avoiding migraine is one of them. A minimum of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise should be done at least three days in a week. People with obesity suffer from more migraines so cutting down on excessive weight is going to help. Pumping the heart, blood and lungs every day is a good way to maintain body vigour. The good hormones like endorphins are released and more oxygen is passed to the body, reducing the possibility of developing a migraine.
For many people, particular types of food can trigger migraines. Mostly this has been associated with meat (aged, cured, and processed), fermented foods, chocolate, and alcohol. Alcohol causes dehydration which in turn causes migraine. Also, the amount of food matter as a smaller dose may not cause a problem but an extra shot of alcohol and an extra piece of meat may just start the process.
Breakfast skipping has become commonplace and it is a major migraine trigger. When your body requires food, it should be given at the right time and meal skipping is harmful in many other ways as well. Maintaining the same time for food intake sets the body in a comfortable routine and that should be continued.
Ditch the caffeine
This may sound counter-intuitive, but migraines are often caused by extra caffeine. Too many cups of coffee or tea should be avoided and many over the counter medicines contain caffeine too, which should be carefully observed.
Stay well hydrated.
Most people don’t realise this. A well hydrated body and system gets through many potential problem triggers, including migraine. Too much alcohol, insufficient water intake and dehydrating body activity can cause problems and 7-8 glasses of water should be drank every day.
Take a break from the computer screen.
Modern lifestyle makes us stare at a computer screen for hours on end. Constant exposure to light rays on the screen can cause migraine and the screen glare is a bummer because it makes us eyes uncomfortable with fatigue. Using anti-glare screens and having intermittent breaks is recommended.
By following the above mentioned tips, surely many scopes of developing a migraine can be averted. As a last resort, prescribed medication is there but it won’t come to that if the tips are followed.
