It is popular, but does it work?
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a vitamin. Some animals can make their own vitamin C, but people must get this vitamin from food and other sources. Good sources of vitamin C are fresh fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits. Vitamin C can also be made in a laboratory.
Historically, vitamin C was used for preventing and treating scurvy. Scurvy is now relatively rare, but it was once common among sailors, pirates, and others who spent long periods of time on board ships. These days, vitamin C is used most often for preventing and treating the common cold.
Further, Vitamin C is required for the proper development and function of many parts of the body. It also plays an important role in maintaining proper immune function.
Hesperidin
Hesperidin is a plant chemical that is classified as a “bioflavonoid.” It is found primarily in citrus fruits. Hesperidin alone, or in combination with other citrus bioflavonoids (diosmin, for example), is most often used for blood vessel conditions such as hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and poor circulation (venous stasis). It is also used to treat lymphedema, a condition involving fluid retention that can be a complication of breast cancer surgery. Hesperidin may help blood vessels function better. It may also reduce inflammation.
Cysteine
Cysteine is an amino acid, a building black of proteins that are used throughout the body. When taken as a supplement, it is usually in the form of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). The body makes this into cysteine and then into glutathione, a powerful antioxidant.
Antioxidants fight free radicals, which are harmful compounds in the body that damage cell membranes and DNA. Researches think free radicals play a role in ageing as well as the development of a number of health problems, including heart disease and cancer.
NAC can help prevent side effects caused by drug reactions and toxic chemicals, and helps break down mucus in the body. It seems to have benefits in treating some respiratory conditions, such as bronchitis and COPD.
