At Hinterland Chiropractic we love to spread the news that regular chiropractic care helps people of all ages – young, middle-aged, and old. However, we make a special point that chiropractic can be particularly important for older patients as it can improve health and mobility, and help seniors regain control of their lives.
Chiropractic care for the “third age” or senior population helps manage and sometimes eliminate acute and chronic pain, restore proper posture, improve mobility and function, increase flexibility, enhance balance, de-stress and tune the nervous system, and improve general health and wellbeing.
Chiropractic and Elderly Health
As our bodies age, bones, joints, and muscles may weaken. And many senior citizens face chronic pain or other issues related to the body deteriorating over time. Science and experience, however, have demonstrated that gentle chiropractic treatment of spinal subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae) can substantially decrease some of the negative affects of ageing.
Chiropractic care is one of the most effective and safest forms of health care used to treat pain due to spinal related conditions. Chiropractic is effective because most causes of spinal disorders are related to abnormalities of the spine and the surrounding soft tissue structures.
Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to identify and treat subluxations and their subsequent effect on the central nervous system. This makes chiropractic treatment a great alternative to anti-inflammatory medication and pain relievers that only mask the symptoms and have many undesirable side effects.
The Risk of Falls
Each year, one in three adults aged 65 years or older fall, often leading to severe injuries to the hips and head, even leading to premature death. Falls are usually the result of a decline in the nervous system function that occurs when people age.
As the body begins to degenerate, natural misalignments of the spinal system occur which impinge nerve signals sent to and from the brain. Over time, this leads to a loss of balance, poor control of the limbs, a decrease in mobility, and a subsantial increase in the risk of falling.
In order to prevent seniors from falling, the body must be realigned in order to decrease the rate of degeneration and improve nervous system function. One way this has been achieved in recent years is through the safe and effective application of chiropractic care.
Chiropractic Care and Mobility
For seniors who are struggling with decreased mobility, chiropractic care has been show to help. Through joint manipulation, soft tissue work, and functional exercise prescription, chiropractors can improve joint range of motion, flexibility, and mobility. These improvements can lead to dramatic increases in overall quality of life. People with more severe mobility issues may be able to regain strength through a mix of chiropractic and physical therapy.
Stay Healthy – Stay out of a Nursing Home!
One study (Coulter, PhD et al. Chiropractic and Care for the Elderly. Top Clin Chiro 1996; 3(2):46-55.) evaluated the health status of 414 elderly individuals (average age of 80 years) and compared those individuals under chiropractic care with those not under chiropractic care:
- 87% of those who used chiropractic care rated their health as good or excellent compared with only 68% in the non-chiropractic group
- Only 13% of those who used chiropractic care rated their health as fair or poor compared with 32% in the non-chiropractic group
- 44% of those who used chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66% in the non-chiropractic group
- Those who used chiropractic care were more likely to be doing strenuous levels of exercise
- At 3 years follow-up, less than 5% of those who used chiropractic care used a nursing home while a staggering 48% of those who did not use chiropractic care used a nursing home
- Only 26% of those who used chiropractic care were hospitalized compared with 48% in the non-chiropractic group
This is a remarkable success rate!
Chiropractic Care and Safety
Some seniors may be concerned about receiving spinal manipulation due to the delicate nature of their bodies. However, chiropractic doctors have been specially trained to treat the needs of the elderly, both safely and effectively.
Dougherty et al. (In The role of chiropractic care in older adults from the US National Library of Medicine) have reported on the safety of Spinal Manipulation Therapy in the older adult population. The data showed adverse event (AE) data lower than previously reported in the literature, with only 35% of the patients experiencing any type of AE. This was a rate lower than that of the general population, regardless of age!
