3.85 million Australians suffer from arthritis pain and stiffness. This means that 1 out of 5 Australians are arthritis sufferers (Access Economics 2007 and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare) Unfortunately the drugs used to treat arthritis can cause a number of unwanted side effects, including ulcers.
Fortunately, if you or your family member is an arthritis sufferer, your doctor at Hinterland Chiropractic can help you find drug-free relief by promoting optimal spinal alignment, which helps keeps affected joints in tip-top shape.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is common but also commonly misunderstood. It is not a single disease, but a catchall term that refers to joint pain or disease. In fact there are more than 100 kinds of arthritis and related conditions. Continue Reading →
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) controls organ function and overall balance of the body. The ANS adjusts or modifies body function in response to things like stress, regulating the heart, blood pressure, and breathing, stomach function, salivation, insulin level, and sexual function.
The ANS has generally been divided into two parts, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the para-sympathetic nervous system (PNS). The SNS is the bodies “flight or fight” mechanism, which kicks in in times of stress. The PNS is the “rest and digest” system, which is responsible for longer-term functions such as digestion.
These systems need to work in harmony and synergy with the SNS being something like a gas-pedal and the PNS being similar to a brake. Continue Reading →
Ear infections are one of the most common forms of infections, particularly among the young. Some studies estimate that more than 80 percent of infants will have at least one middle-ear infection (acute otitis media) before they reach the age of three and ear infection is the most common reason for children to see a doctor with about 16 million kids to the pediatrician each year (Parents Magazine, January 2010)
While ear infections are relatively minor, they can become serious if they become chronic. Infections are often treated with antibiotics and this can be problematic. If the infection is caused by a virus antibiotics will be useless and can often cause stomach distress in children. Even if the infection is bacterial, antibiotic use can lead to drug-resistant bacteria and even lead to future diseases including more gastrointestinal disease and cancer. Continue Reading →
Apples grow all over the globe, varying in taste and appearance. But they all have miraculous health benefits including protection from lung disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and asthma.
That is why Hinterland Chiropractic encourages you to pick apples, from either stores or orchards. Apples are delicious and “pick up” your health.
According to scientists from Cornell University the benefits derive from a combination of phytochemicals, not a specific vitamin or nutrient (Nature 2000; 405:903-4).
Organic apples pack a powerful punch against cancer. Eat the entire apple as the skin is rich in fiber and is considered particularly effective at fighting cancer. Continue Reading →
Almost everyone falls. We trip, we stumble, sometimes we are knocked over by others. Falling can be a very serious threat to health, particularly for older people. Estimates are that one third of all falls happen to those over 65 and fully fifty percent of falls happen to those over 75.
Luckily, most falls are preventable. Hinterland Chiropractic can recommend strategies for preventing and treating falls. Here are five great strategies:
1) See Your Chiropractor
Falls are often related to body health, strength, and balance. All three of these are affected by overall posture. If your spine is not in alignment it is likely that the posture of your entire body will be adversely affected and falls become more probable. Continue Reading →
