Differences between Chiropractic Care and Massage Therapy

Differences between Chiropractic Care and Massage Therapy

When you look at images of Chiropractic care and Massage therapy, it may appear to be of the same kind or very similar kind. However, there is a lot of difference between the method, result, and execution of these two types of therapeutic activities, given that they look very similar on the surface.

Both of these are non-invasive and natural types of treatment. There is no inclusion or application of any sort of medical instrument or drugs whatsoever. The differences are as follows –

Method

Massage is mainly done by hands on the muscles and tissues of our body. It can be done anywhere in our body with the purpose of relaxation. It may include hot stones, hot oil, some herbs and pastes. Based on the type of Massage, sometimes the feet are also used. Squeezing, tapping, rubbing, and pressing are the basic movements done during massaging.

Chiropractic care on the other hand, is done by the hands on and around the spinal cord, surrounding tissues and muscles. It mainly targets the nervous system and addresses musculoskeletal disorders. Spinal and joint misalignment leads to pain and ache in the spine, neck, shoulder and back. Chiropractic care is specialised to address these issues with the manual manipulation of the spinal vertebrae.

Purpose

While both these processes are used for therapeutic benefits, their core purpose is different. Massage therapy isn’t exclusively related to any particular part of the body or any direct major medical benefit. It mainly deals with relaxation. On the other hand, Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system and the spine to address various kinds of discomfort and pain and bring relief and comfort through spinal adjustments. When looked holistically, the significance and scope of Chiropractic care is wider than Massage therapy.

Certification and training

The average training duration of Massage therapists range from a few months to a year at most. To be a certified and proper chiropractor, one needs to undergo years of training and education, sometimes it can be as long as 8 years. It has more depth of knowledge and rigorousness compared to a Massage training. However, it should be mentioned that both of these professions have a thorough understanding of the human body and its functions. There are other factors and requirements that needs to be fulfilled by a chiropractor to be a certified chiropractor and therefore provide services to the patients.

Hence, if you want to just relax your body and there is no exclusive medical purpose to achieve, then Massage therapy should be good enough. If you want to get rid of back pain, posture related pain, shoulder, neck and spine pain, Chiropractic is the way to go. A chiropractor will make you feel so much better than just relaxation and will heal your body through the careful manipulation of the spinal area and nervous systems.
