7 Benefits of Apples You Probably Didn’t Know

According to scientists from Cornell University the benefits derive from a combination of phytochemicals, not a specific vitamin or nutrient (Nature 2000; 405:903-4).
Organic apples pack a powerful punch against cancer. Eat the entire apple as the skin is rich in fiber and is considered particularly effective at fighting cancer.
In one report apple extracts inhibited liver cancer cell between 40 and 57 percent and colon cancer cells by between 29 and 43 percent (Nature 2000;405:93-4).
Researchers in Helsinki believe that an apple a day may keep a stroke away. A study of nearly 10,000 healthy people over 28 years revealed that apple consumption significantly decreased the risk of suffering a stroke (Eur J Clin Nutr 2000:54;415-17).
Heart disease is the number one killer of adults. Fortunately, compounds in apples inhibit oxidation in low-density lipoprotein, or “bad cholesterol”, preventing arterial plaque in arteries and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Scientists have discovered that apple extracts inhibited LDL oxidation at rates between 9 and 34 percent.“ Both fresh apple and commercial apple juices inhibited … LDL Oxidation”. (Life Sci 1999;64:1913-20.)
Lessen Lung Disease
Eating a diet rich in apples may also help ward of lung disease. Researchers studied food data on 2,512 men. Five years later the researchers found that subjects who ate 5 or more apples weekly had significantly stronger lung function (Thorax 2000;55:102-8).
Decrease Diabetes Risk
Type 2 diabetes rates are rocketing worldwide and diabetes drugs are laden with side effects and only treat symptoms. Fortunately, an apple a day goes a long way towards prevention.
One study followed nearly 40,000 healthy subjects who were 45 and older. 8.8 years later it was discovered that participant who ate one or more apples a day decreased diabetes risks by 28 percent (J Am Coll Nutr 2005;24:376-84).
Asthma suffers can breathe easy as apples lower asthma risks. One study of 607 asthma sufferers and 864 asthma free participants discover that those who ate at ate two apples a week enjoyed 22 to 32 percent diminished risk from asthma (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2001;164:1823-8).
Opt for Organic
Whenever possible opt for organic apples that do not contain pesticides and other chemical residue. This is particularly important with children, who often consume a great deal of fruit and are also more susceptible to chemical exposure.
Organic vegetables are also better for our environment, soil, and water.
Squeezing the Benefits out of Juice
Fresh fruit is preferable to fruit juice. Juice, however, though lower in fiber and nutrients, can be a good choice. Look for pasteurized organic juice with no added sugar. Also look for apple juices that are 100% juice. Avoid juices with labels like “cocktail”, “drink”, or “beverage”. These words can mean sugar or liquids have been added.
